Hans's Favourite: Peak + Lantau Grand Day — 8 Hours

If friends visit me for just one day, this is the day I give them. Up the Peak before the city wakes, then across to Lantau in a comfortable car — Tai O's stilt houses in the quiet morning, the Big Buddha in the calm afternoon. My favourite tour, bar none.

This is the tour I would book for my own family. An early start (trust me on the 8:00 — you'll thank me at the Peak), a private car with driver and the essential Lantau permit, and a route that does the island backwards compared to every tour group: Tai O first, Buddha second. Same sights, half the crowds.

Pickup: 8:00 sharp at your hotel, anywhere on Hong Kong Island or in Kowloon. The car, driver and Lantau permit are arranged with licensed local operators I have worked with for years.

• 08:00 · Early pickup — the city is still yawning, and that's exactly the point
• 08:30 · Victoria Peak before the queues: terrace views, quiet paths, the skyline waking up
• 09:45 · Drive via the south side glimpses toward the Lantau Link — bridges, islands and the story of the airport
• 10:45 · Tai O fishing village: stilt houses, shrimp paste, canal boat ride and (fingers crossed) pink dolphins — before the tour buses arrive
• 12:30 · Lunch in Tai O or a monastery vegetarian meal — snacks and coffee whenever you like
• 13:45 · Tian Tan Big Buddha and Po Lin Monastery: the 268 steps, the three sacred halls, and the story of how the face came up by truck
• 15:30 · Ngong Ping plateau stroll; option to descend by the Ngong Ping 360 cable car for the grand aerial finale
• 16:00 · Return drive to your hotel — or drop-off at Citygate for outlet shopping
