Night Markets & Neon — a Mong Kok Evening

Hong Kong after dark is a different city, and the best way to feel it is on foot. I pick you up at your Kowloon hotel and we take a taxi straight into Mong Kok — the taxi is on me. From there we walk our way down: the market streets at neon hour, the century-old Yau Ma Tei Wholesale Fruit Market at its evening rush, and the Temple Street Night Market in full swing. Got six hours? We keep walking down Nathan Road all the way to the harbourfront of Tsim Sha Tsui: Chungking Mansions, 1881 Heritage, the Peninsula, Bruce Lee on the waterfront, the Clock Tower and the Star Ferry pier, with Rosewood, Regent and K11 glittering behind us.

• 17:20 · Mong Kok's market streets as the lights come on: Ladies Market, goldfish street, sneaker street
• 18:15 · Yau Ma Tei Wholesale Fruit Market — a century-old working market at its evening rush
• 19:00 · Temple Street Night Market: stalls, Cantonese opera corners, the fortune tellers' row
• 20:30 · Nathan Road walk — the Golden Mile at full neon
• 21:00 · Finish at the TST waterfront or a taxi back to your hotel

Six-hour version — down to the harbour

With six hours we do not stop at Temple Street: Kowloon Park, Chungking Mansions, 1881 Heritage, the Peninsula's forecourt, the Bruce Lee statue on the Avenue of Stars, the Clock Tower and Star Ferry pier — and the new glimmer of Rosewood, Regent and K11 across the promenade. We end on the water, the whole skyline in front of us.
